Sonamarg emerges as tourist hotspot, attracts over 2.2 million visitors from 2017 to 2023

Ganderbal, Dec 25 (KNO): Sonamarg, known as the ‘Meadow of Gold' has witnessed a remarkable surge in tourist arrivals, becoming a focal point for both domestic and international travellers. From 2017 to November 2023, a total of 2,245,822 visitors explored the enchanting landscapes of Sonamarg, situated at an altitude of 2730 meters in the Ganderbal district, officials informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). Revealing the year-wise breakdown of tourist numbers, he said there has been a consistent increase. The recent surge reflects Sonamarg’s popularity, he said. The figures, as per the official, include domestic visitors numbering 1,777,015, locals contributing 439,531, and foreigners accounting for 34,276 during the period from 2017 to November 2023. From January 2018 to December 2018, the domestic tourist count increased to 211,997, foreigners reached 11,177, and locals were at 74,648. In the following year, from January 2019 to December 2019, the destination saw 32,079 domestic visitors, 6,837 foreigners, and 18,224 locals. The year 2020 witnessed a total of 10,268 domestic tourists, 765 foreigners, and 9,537 locals. The surge continued in 2021, with 187,579 domestic visitors, 20 foreigners, and 115,727 locals. In the period from January 2022 to December 2023, Sonamarg recorded a good increase, attracting 626,751 domestic tourists, 4,085 foreigners, and 87,626 locals, the official said. A local tourism official informed KNO about the rise in tourist numbers, saying it created a positive impact on the local economy. The picturesque destinations within Sonamarg, such as Gagangheer, Fishpoint, Thajwas, Zero-Point, and the last village Sarbal, witnessed an influx of tourists eager to experience fresh snowfall, he said. The tourism season has proven to be fruitful for local businesses and hospitality services, leading to increased demand for accommodations, guided tours, and unique local experiences. Hoteliers expressed their gratitude to the UT administration for the promotion and support, saying the current flow of tourists surpasses previous years. Manzoor Ahmad, a local hotelier, expressed optimism about the future, saying they anticipate more events and cultural programmes that would further boost the tourism sector. The surge in tourists, mostly foreigners, has also benefited houseboat owners on Dal Lake. Looking ahead, discussions on winter activities, including skiing courses starting on January 10, 2024, and a mega New Year festival on December 31, indicate the administration's commitment to positioning Sonamarg as an all-weather tourist destination. As Sonamarg continues to captivate visitors with its pristine landscapes, alpine meadows, and awe-inspiring mountains, it solidifies its status as a must-visit destination on the global tourism map. The positive trend reflects not only the scenic allure of Kashmir but also the region's ability to attract a diverse and international audience, promising a bright future for tourism in the valley—(KNO)
